COMBINED ADVENTURE SAFARI

An exciting seven night riding safari visiting two countries; South Africa and Botswana.

Perfect for riders who want to see as much of Africa as possible. The safari starts with four nights in the Waterberg area in South Africa, followed by 3 nights in the Tuli Block, Botswana. This gives riders plenty of variety as they cover different terrain, pass through various scenery and landscapes, and view a range of different wildlife species. 

From the densely forested areas, blue dams, and grassy plains in South Africa, to the scrub land bush and beautiful baobab and Mashatu trees in Botswana. Canter down wonderful sandy tracks, swim with your horse in stunning scenery, and canter through scrub-land while dodging bushes! 

This safari is guaranteed to give you great wildlife viewing, a feeling of being in the wilderness, get your adrenaline pumping, and give you an amazing experience you will never forget! Wildlife viewing can include giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, nyala, blesbok, eland, wildebeest, jackal, hyena, and also lion, elephants and leopard in Botswana!

 

Location: South Africa and Botswana.

Rider Limitations: For experienced riders only.

Weight limit: 85kg.

Season: January - December (all year).

Dates: Set dates throughout the year.

Riding: 4-5 hours per day. 

Included: All-inclusive of food and drinks, accommodation, airport transfers x 2.

Not Included: Flights, insurance. 

Extra Costs: Tips for staff. Recommendation is around £15/$18 per day. There will also be a conservation levy on arrival to Mashatu wildlife reserve in Botswana of £8.15/$10 per night (£25/$30 for three nights).

Luggage: Riders luggage will be moved by vehicle between camps.

Flights: Flights must be booked to arrive and depart from OR Tambo Airport in Johannesburg. Flights on arrival day must land before 10.15am (shuttle departure is at 11.15am). Flights on departure day must be no earlier than 8pm to arrive at the airport in time from Botswana. 

Internet: Available in the lounge area at camp in South Africa. On the Botswana leg of this trip things get truly wild and there is no internet access.

ACCOMMODATION

While in South Africa riders stay for three nights in tranquil Camp Davidson, nestled in the beautiful South African Bush. With luxury static tents, a cosy lounge/dining area, a beautiful deck view point, and a small pool for downtime, the camp gives the perfect balance between luxury and camping in the wild.

Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with hot running water. 

Surrounded by nature you may see some surprise guests around camp such as porcupines, antelope and owls!

One night in South Africa is spent at Bellevue Lodge, at a nearby game conservancy, for a little bit of luxury. Bellevue lodge is a colonial style lodge, overlooking plains, where large herds of animals can be watched from the deck while enjoying a morning coffee. 

Moving on to Botswana for the next two nights, riders stay in the heart of the Mashatu Game Reserve, in the peaceful Two Mashatu Camp, named after the two huge mashatu trees that shelter it. A-frame tents with en-suite bathrooms are hidden away in the bush for privacy, each with their own front deck for observing wildlife. Camp Two Mashatu also has a pool area for relaxation time.  Guests to listen to the sounds of hippo, leopard, lion, and elephants as they drift off to sleep.

While in Botswana, riders also spend one night in the magnificent Tree Camp! 

Built in the boughs of huge mashatu and leadwood trees, this is the ultimate treehouse! Riders sleep in pods containg beds, overlooking the beauty of Botswana. 

 

Wi-fi is available in the lounge/dining area while at Camp Davidson in  South Africa.

The Two Mashatu Camp and Tree Camp in Botswana are much more wild, with no wi-fi access, giving guests the perfect opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and switch off from the world.

SAMPLE ITINERARY

Please note this is a sample only, individual experiences may vary slightly.

This itinerary acts as a guide to give you an overview of what your safari will be like.

DAY 1: CAMP DAVIDSON, SOUTH AFRICA

 

Riders will be greeted at Johannesburg Airport and transferred to Camp Davidson. After an orientation of camp and late lunch you will be introduced to your horse!

Your horse will have been matched to you based on your experience, personality and any specific requirements you made before your trip.

You will then head out for your first ride for the afternoon, giving you chance to get to know your horse and form a bond.

As you set out on your first ride within the Matlapeng Reserve you will already start to see some of the wildlife species!

Sundowners will be overlooking the plains where zebra and antelope graze, before heading back to camp for a delicious three course dinner.

Sit around the fire after dinner, and finally fall asleep in your tent, immersed in the African bush and listening to the sounds of nature all around.

DAY 5: TREE CAMP, BOTSWANA

 

Riders will arrive in Botswana in time for a late lunch, and are taken to meet their second horse of the trip!

After a short riding test the group heads out into the giant Mashatu reserve and travels to the Two Mashatu Camp.

Along the way riders can take in the sight, smells and sounds of Botswana. The group quietly rides amongst eland, wildebeest, hartebeest, zebra, giraffe, takes long free canters across the open space, and maybe spots a jackal or hyaena!

Guests arrive at the beautiful tree camp for the evening.

DAY 6: CAMP TWO MASHATU, BOTSWANA

 

An early wake up at the tree camp! Riders head out for the morning on a long ride through the reserve, tracking animals with the experienced guide. Riding along the beautiful Limpopo river and maybe spotting hippo or crocodile!

The ride takes you along empty river beds in search of tracks or spoors. Riders my also see baboons shrieking and playing in the trees. 

In the afternoon the group has the chance to head out a game drive, allowing amazing photo opportunities of the wildlife. The guide will do their best to find the big cats of Mashatu... lions and leopard! After driving around until sunset the group has sundowners in a safe area, and watch the breath-taking African sunset.

Guests stay at Camp Two Mashatu, and fall asleep to the sounds of wildlife calls in their tents. 

DAY 7: CAMP TWO MASHATU, BOTSWANA

 

The day starts with coffee delivered to you in bed, followed by a full day of riding in the reserve with a short break for lunch.

Riders spend the day tracking elephants and witnessing one of natures giants from the back of a horse! Large herds of elephants pass by the group, stirring up the ground and taking everyone's breath away.

Riders take snack breaks under the giant mashatu trees between spotting other animals. And you get very lucky you may see a leopard or lion!

The group has their last dinner together in the evening after many hours of riding together, and sit around the campfire.

 

DAY 8: DEPARTURE DAY

 

One last morning ride in the reserve, before saying goodbye and  heading back to  Johannesburg airport.

DAY 2: CAMP DAVIDSON, SOUTH AFRICA

 

Riders become at one with nature during a long morning ride in the reserve, covering different terrain and seeking out wildlife.

Enjoy taking amazing pictures of the nature surrounding you, canter down sandy tracks, and learn about the flora and fauna from your guide. You may bump into giraffes, zebra, wildebeest, impala, blesbok and kudu to name but a few!

The ride finishes up at the lodge this time for our favorite part... swimming with your horse! For those who have never done this before it is the experience of a lifetime!

Lunch will be served at the lodge before riding back to Camp Davidson. You may need an afternoon nap after all the excitement, before heading out on the afternoon safari ride. 

Riders will then head out again to explore. Riders will pass Sunset Lake, where fish eagles are a common sight.

DAY 3: BELLEVUE LODGE, SOUTH AFRICA

 

After a buffet style breakfast riders head South to the Bellevue lodges. The group visits some of the stunning lakes in the reserve and scramble up the rocks to the highest point for some great photo opportunities.

The ride then traverses a wide wetland, home to reedbuck and grass owls, before entering dense woodland. The open plains that follow are aptly known as “Little Serengeti". Large herds of blesbok, eland, wildebeest and kudu are all on view, as are groups of elegant sable, swift red hartebeest, and impressive journeys of giraffe and Cape buffalo.

After a long morning of riding you will reach your accommodation for the night, at a luxurious, colonial style lodge. The lodge overlooks a giant expanse of plains where you can become mesmerized by herds of wildlife.

After a lunch at the lodge and a rest by the pool, the afternoon ride continues to explore this game rich area, closing with sundowners overlooking the African plains.

The evening is spent at the Bellevue lodge, where riders spend in the night in traditional rondavels overlooking the plains. 

DAY 4: CAMP DAVIDSON, SOUTH AFRICA

 

Breakfast overlooking the plains, followed by a  full morning ride to spot some buffalo!

After a hearty lunch you will set off to make the journey back to Camp Davidson, with long, exciting canters along the way.

It is then time to say goodbye to your safari horse, ready for departure to Botswana in the morning. By this point you will be well and truly bonded to your horse after so many beautiful experiences together, and it is time for a sad farewell.
